The trumpet, being the smallest brass instrument in length, has the highest notes. When played loudly, it is very piercing and was originally used in battle to send signals. When played softly it can play a lullaby. In the orchestra, the trumpets often appear at the loud climaxes of the music as they can be heard over all the other sections.
